What's Playing? Copyright and the Music Industry

Music is said to be the universal language of mankind. Music is enjoyed by all, regardless of age, race or gender.

Music is protected by copyright in two respects: the composition (copyright proper) and the recorded music (related rights).

Technological developments, especially in the past decade, have impacted the way we consume music. What with the emergence and prevalence of streaming platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, Deezer, Quboz, to name a few.

Various researches and studies have been conducted on the topic of digital music rights which shall be presented in summary form in the first topic.

The state of the sector is to be reported from the perspective of the recording labels or sound recording producers.

Finally, collective licensing from the perspective of the society of composers, authors and publishers shall be made.
